Surrounded by Tuscany, Lazio and the Marches, Umbria is one of the smallest regions of Italy (8456 sq.kms) and is the only one whose boundaries do not touch the sea. Nonetheless, there is a wide range of different landscapes to be found here, ranging from the Apennine mountains and the sweeping expanses of hilly ranges, to the large valleys and lowlands. All these multifarious landscapes combine to form an overall picture of such scenic beauty that the definition of Umbria as "the Green heart of Italy" would seem to be an extremely suitable one. The inland basins are all tributaries of the Tiber, which runs in a north-south-easterly direction, making up the watershed between the Tyrrhenian and Adriatic Seas.
