Condition Census 1916 Doubled Die Buffalo Nickel
1916 5C Doubled Die Obverse MS64 PCGS. FS-016, Breen-2599. Listed on page 128 of the 2006 Guide Book. Although popular today, this Buffalo Nickel error remained unknown for more than four decades after its production. The first published report (per Lange, 2000) appeared in the July, 1962 edition of The Numismatic Scrapbook. Today, circulated examples number only 100-150 coins. Mint State representatives are even rarer, and Lange's estimate is no more than 10 pieces. PCGS reports six Uncirculated examples, all falling into the MS 62-64 grade range (8/05), and NGC has seen a further eight coins graded MS63 through MS64. Allowing for possible resubmissions, the population reports of the major grading services appear to confirm the accuracy of Lange's estimate.
